Many writers phrase this as "having a seat at the table." I don't want a seat at the table. I want all of us to tear down the table together and use it as kindling for a campfire.Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05134634990600767028noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7925558502203984741.post-54597033460936655032012-07-08T15:16:00.000-04:002012-07-08T15:16:16.977-04:00Travels never blogged: Part 6: Kerteminde, DenmarkLast stop in Denmark was Kerteminde. It's a seaside town. We spent the first day there, the last part of our (almost) two days off, playing volleyball on the beach. Yours truly was sunburned on the right half of her face only. It made for so many great pictures of me. So very many.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDJGavCu0Agi1nbb4DCo0Ye8fZJ2CFcjHopjxr2WBdjonIoOlYkkD0UWJw8sUzHqDCBEJ_tMdIjp7QHrl_qyZcaiWhZew40EMb86t-alZX5GtKDSy6FyHPLybMaaM_QFVnFyn4LtEwqZA/s1600/DSC00275.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDJGavCu0Agi1nbb4DCo0Ye8fZJ2CFcjHopjxr2WBdjonIoOlYkkD0UWJw8sUzHqDCBEJ_tMdIjp7QHrl_qyZcaiWhZew40EMb86t-alZX5GtKDSy6FyHPLybMaaM_QFVnFyn4LtEwqZA/s320/DSC00275.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
There was a statue of a water dragon in town. I only know it was a water dragon because that's what the label told me.<br />

We walked about 2km into the town for class. And here's what we got to see out the window. The building was literally on the edge of the ocean.<br />

We did some science-y things at <a href="http://www.sdu.dk/" target="_blank">Syddansk Universitet (University of Southern Denmark)</a>. And then we had a day off. Up to this point, it has mostly been 10-14 hour days of MATLAB and microphones. So hooray for day off. <br />
<br />
I wandered around town with my classmates.<br />

And science! The course was terribly helpful. And taught by just brilliant people. It mostly consisted of 1) Convert ALL the dB to SPL 2) Calibrate ALL the things 3) Look at ALL the harbor porpoises. Just look at them. They are adorable. I flew into Copenhagen. It was lovely. I was there only briefly (overnight on each end). And I spent my brief time there sleeping and finding a laundromat. Note: Laundromat was in red light district--even more depressing at 9AM.<br />
The first part of the class was in Søgaardlejren. It was on a "base" for the Danish equivalent of the National Guard. <br />
<br />
We stayed here:<br />

I was with my friends for one afternoon and evening then the following day and morning by myself. It was wonderful. Except for the part where my camera died in the Vatican. Alas. Did I buy a disposable camera? Yes I did.<br />
<br />
We will start with the token shot of the Coliseum. <br />

Be still my heart. The water, the buildings, San Marco's (and square), and, of course, all the lions.<br />

This was the view from our hostel.<br />

I took a <a href="http://www.snak.biology.sdu.dk/" target="_blank">course in Denmark</a> last summer. Conveniently, a dear friend and her cousin and another person we know were planning to go to Italy. Even better, it was planned for right before class started! We traipsed around Florence, Siena (an unfortunately short day trip), Venice, and Rome.<br />

Florence is a beautiful city at night, but no good photos to share. The bus ride out to Siena went through lovely Tuscan countryside (bus pictures just don't turn out well).<br />

To console you, here's the sign for Dante's family church (well, his church before the city exiled him). <br />

There was lots of food, primarily gelato and espresso--as we all know, the two major food groups. The major victory was using my rather mediocre Spanish to get one of my fellow travelers antihistamine cream. There was wandering somewhat aimlessly---the best way to go.<br />

More chronicling of a vacation that happened over a year ago to come.<br />

<br />Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05134634990600767028noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7925558502203984741.post-44879781123790700902012-05-22T08:17:00.002-04:002012-05-22T17:31:59.860-04:00I have apparently gone basically an entire year without posting anything. I know this disappoints all 3 of you who read this. As I am stuck at home waiting for a repair person to set up and the only work I can do is read articles, I'm going to do this instead. And then get back to reading those articles, I promise. <br />
What have I been doing instead of blogging you may ask. The answer (which is the answer to most questions that people ask me) is "science." Science, in my case, mostly comes down to 1 experiment day followed by about a week of waiting for the results. Obviously, while waiting I read, analyze, and write. And get distracted by things like <a href="http://video.pbs.org/video/1150618835" target="_blank">entire NOVA episodes about cuttlefish camouflage.</a><br />
Now that I've advanced to candidacy (I would say <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_but_dissertation" target="_blank">ABD, </a>but I feel like having all these papers to get out negates that), it really is more like a regular job. I don't have to come home and study. I often read a paper or do some writing at home, but I don't have classwork hanging over my head all the time.<br />
So, obviously, I've taken up some hobbies. There may be posts about this in the future if I ever think about photographing the process like <a href="http://samann1121.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Jessie</a>. The main ones are roasting my own coffee. I'm doing more large knitting projects, mostly baby blankets for what seems like 1/3 of my female friends. In this case, large doesn't mean complicated. I am trying more complicated things, mostly perfecting mittens. I've tried some cheese making and yarn dying. And, while I've always loved reading, I'm doing a lot more of it for fun since I'm not so sick of all printed words from class and qualifying exams. <br />
<br />
Here's to updating and documenting.Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05134634990600767028noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7925558502203984741.post-37465092152983853262011-05-25T11:48:00.002-04:002011-05-25T11:53:43.964-04:00The proposalNo, not that kind.<br />The time has come to begin writing my dissertation proposal. It is, in fact, open in another window right now. I have 3 parts to said proposal each with multiple specific aims. And I've all ready pulled the reference section from everything else I've written, so I won't have to search through so much crap on EndNote/Papers2. I even have a working title. I can cannibalize a lot of the details from a "grant proposal" that I wrote for a class, and hopefully turn this into a NRSA soon.<br />Now to explaining the my life's work and overcoming writer's block.Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05134634990600767028noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7925558502203984741.post-53150136171000345822011-05-02T08:08:00.001-04:002011-05-02T08:08:51.432-04:00Let there be peace. I'm just sitting in on one as a refresher. So, 2x/week + 0 tests = good life choice. Except that one of the major reasons I'm doing this is because I take my qualifying exam this semester. In about a week and a half. 2 days + 4 exams + 4 hours for each = *whimper* That's more equations than usual for around here. And a few weeks after that is the oral follow-up (which does not involve a dentist, more scary profs). Also, coping with quals stress via the Avett Brothers was a good choice. It seems to be very effective <div>I start teaching lab again tomorrow. At last check, 17 of 20 available slots are filled. It seems that a lot of people dropped because the giant waiting list (for a senior-level lab, at least) is empty and more than my section has extra space. None of the exercises have changed from last year, so this should be pretty easy. </div><div>Tomorrow's lecture will consist of:</div><div>1) Quick run-down of anatomical structures that they have to look for on slides</div><div>2) Biophysics review</div><div>3) Please don't be afraid of the electronics</div><div>3b) Troubleshooting the electronics</div><div>4) Please don't break the electronics</div><div>4b) How to not break the electronics</div><div>It's going to be a good day. And I do not mean that sarcastically. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Peace.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05134634990600767028noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7925558502203984741.post-13405407660856142022010-08-26T22:09:00.004-04:002010-08-27T10:29:19.937-04:00fashion (please don't laugh yet)Here's my confession of the day: I really love Project Runway. It is the only reality show that I like. Although, I'm always afraid that someone will turn on my tv later and see that the last channel I was watching was lifetime. Seriously, though, it's really interesting to watch the creative process and craftsmanship. Some of the things made are beautiful, some are bizarre, and some walk the line between the two. Although there's some element of "destructive" reality tv (people portrayed as less than wonderful, disaster clothes), it's generally a "constructive" show (look at the amazing things these people can do). <div>The best part is seeing the construction. Thus far, my favorite is a dress made out of folded napkins. Even with more traditional materials, the process is fascinating. <div>And now for the part where I feel conflicted. It's about stuff, about appearances, about living up to some social standard, and a dose of product placement. There's an element of what certain people say is "fashionable" is absolutely true. But this conflicts with what is said about being true to your own aesthetic. </div><div>So I like the idea, design, creativity, making things, lots of viewpoints. But the undertones of consumerism and conventional standards of female beauty really bother me. I will keep watching and likely keep being slightly irritated.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Peace</div><div><br /></div></div>Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05134634990600767028noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7925558502203984741.post-8936230153902293962010-07-13T21:29:00.003-04:002010-07-20T07:15:40.731-04:00Wonderful book that I should have mentioned a long time ago<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Selected-Works-T-S-Spivet/dp/0143117351/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1279070950&sr=8-1">The Selected Works of T.S. This means moving onto the not-free programs. And one of those not-free programs is $5000 for one non-movable license. For that, it should do backflips and be able to read my mind. But, alas, it does not. I have even had to read the manual.<br />Life lesson of the day: If you want to make ridiculous amounts of money in science, get into research technology.<br /><br />Peace.Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05134634990600767028noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7925558502203984741.post-19282861927099351242010-05-24T11:24:00.004-04:002010-09-18T21:14:20.406-04:00Beginings and EndingsToday my little sister graduates from high school. This is a good thing, as she will be free.<br />I'm done with year two. This semester was just awful, class-wise. But it's over and wasn't a complete waste of time. Now on to studying for quals (which are in September) and doing as much research as humanly possible. I'm working on 5 different projects with a possible 6th.<br />1) Anatomy<br />2) in vivo physiology<br />3)in vitro physiology<br />4) allometry/development<br />5) cross-taxa coding model<br />6?) comparative within taxa<br /><br />As I write this, I'm watching the Blues Brothers--which is always a good choice.<br />I'm reading <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Intuition-Allegra-Goodman/dp/0385336101/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1274715321&sr=8-1">Intuition by Allegra Goodman</a> to see if it's a good alternative to the awful novel we read for research ethics. With about 50 pages to go, I'm very pleased. Decent writing + interesting treatment of ethical issues = good choice. Anyone else ever read a good novel about research that has some form of ethics in it?<br /><br />Peace.Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05134634990600767028noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7925558502203984741.post-7430205815405185022010-04-15T21:50:00.005-04:002010-05-31T17:47:28.126-04:00graphs!Anyone who knows me knows how much I like graphs and charts and any kind of visual representation of just about anything.<br />I found this <a href="http://www.aharef.info/static/htmlgraph/">website</a>:<br />And here's the graph for the ingenious site you are now perusing:<a href="http://www.aharef.info/static/htmlgraph/?url=http://laboratoryamusings.blogspot.com/"> http://www.aharef.info/static/htmlgraph/?url=http://laboratoryamusings.blogspot.com/</a><br />I can't figure out how to get the code into blogger, so you'll have to click.<br /><br />I'm writing a paper on how the brain and intelligence may (or may not) be related on various anatomical and physiological levels. It tells my that I like "visually-striking cerebral dramas" along with "mind-bending romantic comedies." I don't even know what those categories mean. But I think it makes me sound really pretentious.<br />Back to molecules.Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05134634990600767028noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7925558502203984741.post-30275456798282151282010-03-07T20:33:00.002-05:002010-03-07T20:40:28.946-05:00books, work, etcI should be programming now. But I'm watching the Oscars. Which is rather inexplicable. But there's Neil Patrick Harris doing a song and dance number wearing a sequined suit jacket, so that's totally worth it. Also, if Avatar wins best picture, I will be very cranky. Because that was neocolonial nonsense. Along with about a hundred other awful things that I will not enumerate (out of sheer mercy).<br />Programming is still making me crazy. But I shall beat Matlab. Woman shall triumph over machine.<br />I've finally finished <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Dangerous-World-Butterflies-Subculture-Conservationists/dp/1599215551/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1268012392&sr=8-1">The Dangerous World of Butterflies</a>. Really. So in that spirit, I give you <a href="http://www.mentalfloss.com/blogs/archives/45492">OCTOPUS VIDEOS!!</a>. They're actually neat little (or giant) organisms. And the invertebrate factor makes for an interesting discussion; one I may subject my dear readers to at some point.<br />Clearly, I haven't been a very good blogger lately. This semester has been more frenetic than I thought it would be. And I was betting on very. My computational neuro class, while fascinating, involves Matlab programming. Which makes me want to curl up in the fetal position. Cellular and molecular neuro is fantastic and makes me miss biochemistry.<br />So yes, that brings us to 3 classes. 10 credits. And almost 0 research. This makes me very irritable. I have some data to analyze, but most of it looks like trash. And I have some digital models to work on, but no time to do experiments.<br />Which brings us to our point: I have a lot of ambivalence about this interdisciplinary program thing. I chose this program, this university because I wanted the broad background in neuroscience. But right now, it is making me absolutely crazy. We're required to take a few more classes than the other biology programs, which doesn't seem like a big deal, but a few more grad classes is a lot. I know I'll be grateful for it in the long run (when I try to get a job), but I just want to be done with classes and get fully into my dissertation research. This is like how I felt about gen ed classes in college. Let's be honest here: US history post-Civil War was a royal pain in the ass when I was taking it. But I'm glad I did.<br />Has anyone else had this experience?<br />Anyway, I shall continue to trudge through the code and signal pathways and primary literature.<br /><br /><br /><br />PeaceKatiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05134634990600767028noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7925558502203984741.post-44988762423337846352010-01-13T22:12:00.002-05:002010-01-13T22:21:10.375-05:00builiding rehabilitationDuct work, new lighting<br />Ladder evasions galore<br />Let it end soon, please<br /><br />They're ripping out all the lighting and duct work in our building. Which is nice, yes, but I had to avoid three ladders to go from my office to the lab. And that is a distance of about 10 feet.<br />Other than that, experiments proceed as planned. It is awfully nice when classes (other than intersession) aren't in session. It is so quiet. And there's no line at the co-op!<br />And on top of that, I have an awesome new vegetarian cookbook. The two recipes I've tried so far have been quite tasty. Good days all around.<br /><br /><br />Peace.Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05134634990600767028noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7925558502203984741.post-20743521355736996052010-01-12T20:58:00.002-05:002010-01-12T21:00:55.688-05:00New year?Another new year<br />Another year of lab work<br />Maybe some progressKatiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05134634990600767028noreply@blogger.com0
